Beholding the Self | August 21st
What do we see when we behold our own image? We do it all the time, on our phones, in the mirror, on social media. What informs our perceptions of our self-image and what do we choose to see? Can we approach looking at ourselves with curiosity and consideration rather than judgement and assessment?
This class will explore the nature of observation for image making (drawing from life) as it applies to beholding the self. The act of drawing is really the act of seeing, objectively and curiously, and translating that vision. What happens when we see ourselves as something to carefully consider in this way?
There will be brief readings on drawing and seeing, along with poetry selections on self-image and self-discovery. There will be no-experience-necessary drawing exercises that will create room for curiosity and patience, and time to write and reflect. We will explore self-portraiture as a practice, using drawing, poetry and writing to create space for self-discovery and self-acceptance.
You will leave with a mixed media ‘self-portrait’ as a reminder of what you have experienced in class. Bring a pen and paper, other art supplies will be provided.
August 21st | 6:30pm-8:30pm
Maggie received her BFA in 2007 from the University of New Hampshire. When she moved to Boston in 2008, she took a job at a donut shop and began bartending at a much beloved Cambridge pub. After working in artisan bakeries for about 6 years, she decided not to go to pastry school and returned to UNH in 2013 to complete her MFA.
Artmaking for Maggie has always been about bearing witness. Her favorite thing to paint is people, but she loves painting organic forms and places. She also makes woodcuts and charcoal drawings.
You can see Maggie’s work at www.maggiecedarstrom.com and @maggie_cedarstrom_art on instagram.
